So close to “Sugar Free”…
Its been a long and trying week, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to get this one in. But, today, things seemed to calm a bit - Munchkin was feeling better, work slowed and there was some time to think about meals. I am not one for a lot of sweets or processed food so this wasn’t too difficult, but I was surprised to find out about some things that contained sugar that I normally would never have guessed. Munchkin joined in the fun…somewhat…I didn’t deny her bread or her dessert cookie!!
Breakfast: We both had scrambled eggs with shredded cheddar topping. I had an Empire apple and Munchkin had a pear and a piece of cinnamon toast. (I was jealous of her toast, I will admit!)
Lunch: For me it was fresh spinach salad with mushrooms, hard boiled egg and toasted almonds. I used a bit of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Munchkin had cheese sandwich. We shared an orange and some baby carrots.
Dinner: Here’s where I fell off course. I decided to make breaded pork chops with steamed broccoli and brown rice. Good thinking right? Well who knew breadcrumbs had sugar in them. Really - I had no idea. I figured spices, but sugar?? And I didn’t think to read the can until after they were in the oven. So fail on that one! But otherwise, dinner was pretty good!
For beverages, I had two cups of coffee (no sugar or sweetener) and water the rest of the day. Munchkin held on to her orange juice all day - she is just getting over her cold, so the extra Vit. C was okay with me. And she got a Nilla Wafer cookie for her dessert. Hey - she’s 2, she gets a cookie!
I would say that the toughest part was to remember to THINK about everything that was being cooked or going into the meal. I did miss using a different salad dressing, but those things are loaded with sugar! So I guess going forward I’ll be paying a little more attention to ingredients. I may not lose the orange juice and toast…again I was jealous of Munchkin! But hey, all things in moderation right?
